Schools, food pantries prepare for summer meal programs and increased need CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Capital Region districts are just days away from school out for summer. For some families, summer doesn’t equal beach vibes and fun times — it brings anxiety wondering how to feed kids without their school breakfast and lunch. "The need is still consistent, and it’s not going anywhere," says Autumn Wallace, a high school teacher and co-coordinator for the Mohonasen Central School District summer feeding program.NEWS10 visited the Mohon food distribution center where more than 30 boxes were packed, ready to hand to families who've signed up this year. Wallace says this is more families than they'd served before the pandemic and adds the pandemic-era funding made some things easier. "They were really working on trial by fire and figuring things out as they went—like we all were," she explains of Mohon's regular food pickups during remote learning. "Then again once we were in regular school, especially that first year or so, every kid got free breakfast...

Final game checks pulled from Empire players, coaches' accounts ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) -- The drama surrounding the Albany Empire continues, even after the team's termination from the National Arena League. Former Empire interim head coach Moe Leggett tells NEWS10 ABC Sports Director Griffin Haas that multiple Empire players and coaches had their final game check pulled out of their bank accounts. Leggett says the players and coaches that had their payroll accounts set up were originally paid for the team's final game against Orlando. Leggett and multiple players noticed that money was gone by Thursday morning. Leggett says he has reached out to Empire owner Antonio Brown's accountant, Alex Gunaris, but has been unable to reach him. NEWS10 has also reached out to Gunaris, and we have not yet heard back. This comes after the Empire were kicked out of the National Arena League for not paying their league assessments. Democrat Marion Porterfield is trying to unseat three-term mayor Gary McCarthy.Porterfield has been on the city council for more then ten years. She says the downtown area has seen some improvements the past few years but more attention needs to be focused on other neighborhoods.The democrat claims the city is facing an alarming trend. "We are losing staff at city hall at a rapid rate", said Porterfield. She adds, "Part of that is because of the leadership at city hall, when people leave they feel they are under appreciated, morale is very low and we need to keep those people in order to keep the progress going in the city of Schenectady."The democrat sat down with News10 to discuss the issues facing the city ahead of the Tuesday, June 27 primary.

Former LAPD officer convicted of raping woman after DNA links him to crime A former Los Angeles Police Department officer has been convicted of raping a woman while off-duty in 2015.William Rodriguez, 38, was arrested in July 2019 on multiple counts of sexual assault, including two alleged rapes.Rodriguez, a ten-year LAPD veteran, was taken into custody and immediately relieved of his duties. According to the Police Department, Rodriguez was identified as the suspect in a 2015 rape after police received a "cold hit" on his DNA through the Combined DNA Index System, aka CODIS.Detectives began investigating Rodriguez after a woman came forward to accuse him of rape in 2018.
